Family-owned and -operated since 1964, Harlan Construction offers unique capabilities to perform general and industrial contractor work as well as sitework, metals fabrication and erection, concrete work, general trades, carpentry, and other services on projects in a wide variety of size and scope.
Self-performed work is rare in contracting today. From our skilled labor foremen to our leadership, the Harlan team maintains a willingness to roll up our sleeves to complete each job successfully and safely.

Harlan’s technical acumen spans a broad range of industries. We work in aerospace, power generation, hospitality, warehousing, distribution, and other sectors with clients throughout Virginia and North Carolina.
Harlan Construction Expands Self-Perform Capabilities
Using our own expert crews to perform concrete work, steel work, sitework, and general interior construction gives us greater control over quality, cost, and schedules. Our skilled work crews are devoted to their project, and can avoid juggling multiple subcontractors who may have differing priorities.
Our excellent record on quality and safety extends to general contracting for construction on a much broader scale. Our dual capacity allows us to pursue larger projects with efficiency and confidence in an established relationship.
The success of this model has inspired us to expand Harlan’s self-performing capabilities. We are currently expanding our facility to five times its original capacity. The new Self-Perform Center enables us to meet clients’ needs on a larger scale and to increase our capabilities for metal fabrication.

Safety Certification
Above all else, we want everyone on our job sites to go home safely to their families at the end of each workday. Everything we do at Harlan Construction is held to this essential standard.
Because we’re industrial contractors at our core, Harlan upholds the most rigorous safety standards on every project we fulfill, even in sectors that typically pose less risk. We continually train our employees to maintain a robust safety culture and we comply with some of the most stringent client-driven safety programs in the Mid-Atlantic region (Dominion Energy and WestRock, for example).
As we value and prioritize our workers’ health and safety, we employ a Safety Director and require executive leadership involvement, leading to very low rates of injury and high employee retention. The efficacy of our safety standards and protocols is further evidenced by our low experience modification rating (EMR). Harlan’s EMR has never exceeded 1.0, indicating our exemplary safety record.
